The past week has been one of excitement and learning for the SambaSports Youth Agenda family. Maryam Mohamed Juma, Abbie Muthoni, and Mohamed Mwachausa recently joined other RAFIKI SRHR network partners from various organizations in a training session held in Marallal, Samburu County.
The goal of the training was to build the capacity of 17 youth-friendly Samburu Community Health Volunteers, health workers, and media personalities as RAFIKIs. These individuals will serve as close friends and confidantes to the struggling and disenfranchised adolescents who often face difficult decisions and emotional turmoil without anyone trustworthy to turn to for guidance.
The RAFIKI Model is designed to cultivate trust and confidence in mentors, facilitators, and volunteers working as close friends (RAFIKIS) to hundreds of adolescent boys and girls. Through this model, young people will be better equipped to understand their vulnerabilities, prevent abuse, mitigate pain and anguish caused by a lack of emotional support, misinformation, myths, retrogressive cultures/rituals, taboos, negative masculinity/femininity, and rampant exploitation of unsuspecting or helpless adolescents and teenagers.
In Kwale County, SambaSports is championing the RAFIKI Model for the Coast Region. This model will integrate child protection, SRHR, advocacy against SGBV, and mental health awareness and support as RAFIKI packages carefully imparted to adolescents and teenagers in schools and villages.
The success of the RAFIKI Model is thanks to the hard work and dedication of individuals such as Camilla Wirseen, who provided unrivaled stewardship on the model, Helen Mwathi from Bayer, and colleagues Aino Smith and Nathalie Lundqvist from Sweden and Finland, who offered their love, care, and support during the training.
In conclusion, the RAFIKI SRHR Support Network is a powerful initiative that will transform the lives of vulnerable adolescents and teenagers across Kenya. By cultivating close relationships between young people and trusted mentors, the RAFIKI Model is providing a lifeline to those who need it most. SambaSports Youth Agenda is proud to be a part of this incredible program and looks forward to continuing to support its growth and success.
