At Kizurini Secondary School in Kaloleni, we recently had the privilege of engaging with over 900 learners on a topic close to our hearts: “Academic Excellence through Language Proficiency with Debate and Public Speaking.” Through the Intellectual Literacy and Leadership Program (ILLP), we embarked on a mission to inspire and motivate students to embrace English Speaking and develop vital skills that will shape their future.

In many schools across the Coast region, students face challenges with English Speaking, often lacking the necessary motivation and inspiration to embrace the language. During our visit, we emphasized the significance of English Speaking and encouraged students to practice speaking, make the Dictionary their closest companion, and immerse themselves in English literature. We stressed the value of reading books, listening to, and watching documentaries in English as powerful tools for language acquisition and fluency.
One of the key aspects we highlighted during our interaction was the transformative power of public speaking and debate. We explained how these activities can significantly enhance language skills, critical thinking abilities, and research proficiency. By engaging in public speaking and debate, students develop confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to express their ideas articulately and persuasively. These skills are invaluable for future academic pursuits and career success.

While our focus was primarily on language proficiency and communication skills, we also addressed the broader issue of academic excellence. We urged students to prioritize their studies and highlighted the detrimental impact of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy on their future prospects. By emphasizing the importance of staying focused and setting goals, we aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and determination among the students, empowering them to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
Our visit to Kizurini Secondary School was a profound experience, enabling us to witness firsthand the challenges students face in English Speaking and academic pursuits. Through the ILLP, we endeavored to create a positive attitude towards language proficiency, public speaking, and academic excellence. By inspiring students to embrace English, fostering critical thinking through debate, and encouraging a strong academic focus, we hope to empower these young minds with the tools they need to succeed.

As we departed from Kizurini Secondary School, we left with a renewed sense of hope and optimism, knowing that through dedicated efforts, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of these students. Together, let us continue to support initiatives like the SambaSports Youth Agenda and work towards nurturing a generation of intellectually proficient, confident, and capable leaders.
