SambaSports has been in the vanguard of coloring the world of young people in Kwale since its inauguration in 2018. Most of these efforts were through sports and arts. As the impact is set to be felt deeper in the hearts of youths in Kwale, SambaSports brings together a group of twenty entrepreneurs from the informal sector to offer apprenticeship and support for youths in social hangouts.
The apprenticeship will complement the efforts made by the Shared Futures Project; an initiative targeting youths in Kwale to empower and build their capacity—protecting them from vulnerabilities including violence extremism, and drugs and substance abuse. The Shared Future Project is funded by Kerk in Actie through ICCO and jointly implemented by SambaSports and AYT.
These entrepreneurs from Likoni to Ukunda have committed to collaborating with SambaSports to train and equip the vulnerable youth in social hangouts with skills and knowledge for at least 3 months. They have also identified the challenges facing youths in Kwale which have exposed them to vulnerabilities. These challenges include lack of education and better upbringing, unemployment and drug abuse. They have unanimously given a green light to the recommendations and are positive towards the task ahead of them.
Youths from 9 social hangouts from Ukunda to Likoni will be equipped with skills in carpentry, plumbing, welding, dressmaking, hairdressing and barbering. Mohammed Mwachausa, Partnership Adviser of SambaSports, spoke a the meeting and emphasized that the partnership with the entrepreneurs will see the latter trained on Sales and Marketing from learning institutions. He also mentioned that this approach has been used in Lamu, Mandera and Garissa Counties to transform the lives of over 5000 youths.
