The devastating rupture to our socioeconomic lives in the face of overbearing tentacles of stress, trauma and depression is not a product of a student event, like a volcanic explosion, No, Never!…….Our ever exposed precarious and fragile mental challenges is a product of continuous neglect and mutilation of our traditional social and cultural safety nets that cared for our wellbeing first, before thinking of what we can give.
Mischievously, as a society, we took a wrong turn and progressively fought, and smeared at, all the cohesive social-connectors; extended family gatherings, songs and dances that inspired love and harmony, the Romes, Moros, Kayambas, Tsikitsis, Mdundikos and Vifudus that studiously fought away divisive tendencies, and stuck a community together like adhesive glueđł
The result is hitting our faces so fiercely hard: magnified stress levels, zero resilience for mental shakes, trauma, depression, suicide and homicides washing away families like a plague.
It is in response to such a glaring disaster that we choose to reach out to our young souls in primary schools, aged 10-14 and 15-17, to support them with skills to cope with stress and stressors.
Our team of young, skilled, passionate and devoted youth-mentors, who themselves benefitted from a transformative 12 weeks period of community care and relational wellbeing therapy sessions, offer positive warm wings to cover our unsuspecting, vulnerable children, already surrounded by uncountable negative vibes in their lives.
For six consecutive weeks, our able youth mentors offer safe spaces for dialogues, offer listening ears and loving hearts to children who, ordinarily, may not have had any opportunity, hitherto, to express themselves, their fears, their dreams, and their expectations; not even from their own parents, nor teachers.
The experiential, participatory, playful and story-telling modelled mental wellness training sessions inspire the children to quickly build trust and open up their heart bowels, …wells of flooding emotions, allowing their mentors to support, or refer.
We are ecstatic about the positive outcomes of a generation of young mentors that we send out to the world to spread positive vibes, trust, hopes and faith. This is what #KumekuchaQuest , a New Dawn of Hope and Connections offer to our society, thanks to our amazing partnership with The Green String Network , with facilitative support from Grand Challenges Canada / Grands DĂ©fis Canada .
